Life Legacy


Dean Joseph Thoreson, age 56, Watertown, formerly of the Clark and Vienna communities, died in the Prairie Lakes Hospital at Watertown on Friday afternoon, October 13, 2006.

Funeral services will be held at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Vienna on Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at 11AM with the Reverend Fred Rosin officiating. Private burial will take place in the Pleasant Lutheran Cemetery near Vienna. Dorothy Fuller will be the organist. The congregation will sing "Jesus Loves Me" and "Amazing Grace". Jan Hanson will sing "How Great Thou Art". Casketbearers will be John Thoreson, Daniel Stevens, Jerry Tiggelaar, Larry Whirledge, Kerwin Kannegieter, Denny Montgomery and Matt Barnard.

Visitation hours will be on Monday from 5-8 PM at the Furness Funeral Home in Clark and 1 hour preceding services at the Church on Tuesday.

He was born at Watertown on October 5, 1950, the son of Loren and Laurene (Strohfus) Thoreson. Dean was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. He attended school at Willow Lake graduating from Willow Lake High School in 1968. Following his high school graduation, he attended Nettleton Business College and South Dakota State University at Brookings prior to joining the United States Air Force. He served during the Vietnam War. Recently he attended the dedication of the Vietnam War Memorial in Pierre, something he had set a goal on attending once he learned of the dedication date.


Following his honorable discharge he worked in various communities in South Dakota including Sioux Falls where he was the manager of the Hinky Dinky Grocery and other retail employment firms. He also worked for a time in Minneapolis and later in Fargo, ND where he managed the Big Wheel Auto store. In November of 2005 he became a resident of the Fay Wookey Memorial Assisted Living Center and in July of 2006 he moved to Watertown.


He was a longtime member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Vienna where he was confirmed in 1964. He was a member of the D.A.V. and a Vietnam War Veteran. Love for his daughters and family was second to none. Some of his favorite pastimes included fishing, hunting, gardening and other outdoor activities. He enjoyed spending time with friends in all walks of life. Another passion of his was taking pictures and every aspect of music.


Grateful for having shared in his life are his daughters, Andrea Thoreson of Phoenix, AZ and Jessica Thoreson of Fargo, ND and their Mother, Karen; his parents Loren and Laurene Thoreson, a brother John Thoreson and wife Julayne all of Willow Lake and a sister, Barbara Stevens and husband Kim of Lake Norden and 4 nieces and a nephew. He also leaves a close friend and classmate, Jan Hanson of Browns Valley, MN, a very special aunt, Minerva (Thoreson) Hanson of Watertown, other aunts and uncles amd a host of cousins.


He was preceded in death by all of his grandparents, a special uncle, Phil Hanson and other aunts and uncles.
